Call to Order: President Ray Franks called the meeting to order at 6:45 P.M. Ray introduced our sponsor for the evening, MET Electrical Power Systems Specialists. Brenda Henwood introduced Jay Harper from Pepco Energy Services, who talked about high quality, low cost air filtration technology available from StrionAir, Inc.

Business Meeting: Ray Franks called the business meeting to order at 7:15 P.M. The minutes for the June 2004 meeting were approved as printed. The attendance for this evening's meeting was as follows: 20 hospital members, 26 associate members and 1 guest. The actual count was 53. The 50/50 Raffle was drawn. Ted Aland from UPMC Braddock Hospital won $71.

Treasurer's Report: Dick Barker read the treasurer's report. It was approved as read. Dick mentioned that the name tags have been updated and he would like to be informed of any errors and to, please, leave your name tag in the box when leaving so that he knows that it's not missing. Dick, also, noted with sadness the death of a long time member and past President of HESP, Paul E. Tarnosky. Paul, who was President in 1983, was retired from Mercy Providence Hospital.

New Members: There were no candidates who applied for membership tonight.

Guests: Carol Lang, sales rep for Filtech, Inc., introduced herself. Carol will be stepping in for Keith O'Toole.

Committee Reports

Education: Michael Bryer — This year's educational program for Stationary Engineers will be held on Wednesday, October 6, 2004, and again on Wednesday, October 13, 2004. Participants will have a choice of days and will not have to attend both. The program will be held at Duquesne University's Fisher Hall Conference Center, starting at 7:30 A.M. Parking, lunch and materials will be included in your registration cost. This year's topics are Fire Pump Operation and Maintenance and Air Filtration. The cost and further registration information will be available soon..[See Education.]

Newsletter: Ron Lukcic — Ron thanked our advertisers, both old and new, and asked that we support the "green pages." Ron also mentioned that he is soliciting ads for next year on a first-come first-served basis and that the rates will be the same as this year. Also, we will be accepting web links from our site to yours for a yearly fee of $100. Ron, also, thanked Walt and Marion, our "spirits dispensers," and our caterers.

Codes and Regulations: Bill Brooks — In Bill's absence, Roy mentioned that new regulations being considered for fire dampers may require yearly inspections rather than the current four year requirement. Roy has form letters, along with addressees, should anyone want to write to the appropriate agencies telling them why this would be a hardship.

ASHE: No report.

Biomedical: Dan Procupp — Dan and Myron announced that the BMET exam will be administered twice a year, in November and in May, in Columbus, Ohio and Philadelphia, Pa. If we can get five or more participants, we may be able to get an exam scheduled in Pittsburgh, possibly at a reduced fee. Contact Dan or Myron if you are interested and also for information on a review.

Christmas In April: Chuck Froetschel & Linda Cardello Walker — no report.

Golf Outing: Steve Tarasovic — Steve reminded us that this year's golf outing is scheduled for Thursday, September 16th at the Lindenwood Golf Club in Peters Township. Steve said that we have over 70 golfers signed up and anyone else interested in playing has until Friday, September 10th to contact him. Steve also has room for a few more hole sponsors [check our Events page for the latest information].

Membership: Brenda Henwood — no report.

Holiday Party: Chuck Froetschel — This year's holiday party will be on Friday, December 10 at the American Serbian Club, downstairs. We will have our regular caterers and "spirits dispensers," Walt and Marion. The theme will be a Monte Carlo night with games of chance, slots, poker, roulette and a crap table. No money will be involved; we will be using tickets handed out at the door. More information to follow. [Check our Events page for the latest information.]

Picnic: Bruce Saddler — Bruce said that this year's picnic was on Saturday, July 24th at Overlook Park and that a good time was had by all. Activities included: bouncy boxing, a moon walk and a magician. The food was excellent and we had 83 people in attendance. Ray expressed our thanks to everyone who attended and to the vendors who donated prizes and to the picnic committee who did an excellent job.

Old Business: No report

New Business: "HESP in the Military." Ron Lukcic suggested that anyone who has family members, employees or coworkers involved in Operation Nobel Eagle in Iraq or Operation Freedom in Afghanistan to please provide information so that we can put it in the newsletter. What he would like is the person's name, affiliation and assignment along with the APO for gift boxes, cards or letters. This information can be given to Ron or any of the officers listed on the back of the newsletter.

Myron suggested that HESP once again sponsor an Eagle Scout, someone who will be going into Engineering or BMET. The fee to nominate such a person is $150. The motion was made and was approved.

Dale Bonner suggested the we look into ways to help the hurricane victims in Florida either by donations or by volunteers going to Florida to help.

Discussion included checking with the local ASHE chapter or a local Hospital Engineering Organization. It was agreed that this topic will be discussed at next week's board meeting. Myron or Roy will call ASHE for further information.

Announcements for the elections for 2005 officers will be made at next month's meeting. The nominees will be Dick Barker for Treasurer and Frank Rutledge for Secretary. We are looking for someone to fill the position of President-Elect.

Adjournment: There being no further business, Ray adjourned the meeting at 8:05 P.M.

Respectfully submitted,
Frank Rutledge.

September's Meeting Sponsor

HESP extends its thanks and appreciation to: MET. The following synopses were submitted.

Speaker: Jay Harper, Pepco Building Services
Subject: Providing Critical Care for Indoor Air

Overall concept: Introduce three leading technologies: Aircuity, Pure Choice and Strion Air to better address and maintain healthy, indoor air in hospitals. Discussions covered were: Commissioning / re-commissioning of existing equipment, real-time monitoring and viewing of select locations brought to your desktop PC, and installing germicidal / high performance filter purification to eliminate nosocomial infections and any airborne threat. Emphasis was placed on the integration of all three technologies to aid and improve your IAQ program.

I had a great time Tuesday night, and please remember that I am available for any follow-up or questions regarding our products and services. Brenda is also available, but you knew that without my help. She is a special person with enough great attitude for all of us! If we can help, plug us in, Coach!

Warm Regards,
Jay Harper
