Meeting Synopsis
HESP extends its thanks and appreciation to Dr. Janet Stout and Dr. Victor Yu.
The educational topic for the evening was hospital-acquired infections caused by
waterborne pathogens. Legionella (the cause of Legionnaires' disease) was the
focus of the discussion by the "Legionella Experts," Dr. Janet Stout and Dr.
Victor Yu. They lectured on the current status of public health and engineering
guidelines for the prevention of hospital-acquired Legionnaires' disease.
The members were, also, updated on the newest information on Legionella control
methods, including chlorine dioxide and point-of-use filtration. Much of this
information is available for review at: www.legionella.org. Dr. Yu emphasized
that hospital engineers now play a major role in disease prevention and control
of waterborne pathogens like Legionella.
The Special Pathogens Laboratory provided Legionella testing services to
hospitals nationwide and was closed by the VA in July 2006. The expertise of
this laboratory is being retained by another organization and will be available
to assist infection control professionals and hospital engineers with Legionella
control and testing in early 2007. When Special Pathogens Laboratory officially
opens, HESP will be notified.
Respectfully submitted, Dr. Janet Stout and Dr. Victor Yu
