DIRECTOR OF FACILITIES ENGINEERING, ALLEGHENY GENERAL HOSPITAL, PITTSBURGH, PA

ORGANIZATION

Founded in 1885 on Pittsburgh’s historic North Side, Allegheny General Hospital has earned an international reputation for excellence and innovation in the care of patients, medical education and research. Serving Pittsburgh and the surrounding five-state area, the 829-bed, 2.2 M square foot academic health center offers a wide array of medical and surgical services. Allegheny General Hospital serves as the clinical campus for the Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Vice President of Operations, Facilities, the Director is responsible for providing leadership in the planning, organization, implementation, and performance of all activities supporting the Facilities Department.  Furthermore, the accountability for managing maintenance operations; planning, design, and construction; compliance; and utility performance lies with this professional.

SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

The successful candidate will:

  1. Coordinate the ongoing development and application of the organization’s facilities support and asset management strategies;
  2. Demonstrate success in developing and sustaining quality service programs in plant operations, building services and planning with knowledge of regulatory agency standards;
  3. Effectively provide for the recruitment, development, and retention of qualified staff to meet all aspects of repair, upkeep, and reliable performance of the institution’s assets;
  4. Provide leadership and direction for facility development and infrastructure improvements with a coordinated strategy to upgrade, replace, and improve the support structure of the institution;
  5. Assure customer satisfaction and quality through the continuous improvement of operational standards and protocols for the delivery of services based on feedback and the monitoring of outcomes.
  6. Mentor a staff of approximately 54 FTE’s in the provision of effective services in support of the mission of the organization.

PRIMARY CHALLENGES

In the areas of responsibility, the following opportunities exist for the Director:

  1. Demonstrate the  effectiveness of department accountability in a union environment with a staff of substantial longevity;
  2. Enhance critical communication between facilities administration and customers including medical staff,  clinical leadership, and senior administration;
  3. Develop and implement strategies to support the cost efficient regeneration of the organizations assets and infrastructure;
  4. Provide an ability to streamline organizational communications and manage expectations at all levels.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or an appropriate discipline, coupled with a demonstrated technical competency in the healthcare facilities engineering discipline. Five years of facilities management leadership experience with 10 or more years experience in operations and maintenance of a healthcare environment is required.  Registration as a Professional Engineer is highly desired.
